TNS Beaconhouse

Lahore, Pakistan

The Pakistani school leveraging a wellbeing-centred model to build autonomy and confidence for neurodivergent learners

TNS Beaconhouse, an independent kindergarten, primary and secondary school in Lahore, Pakistan, is challenging one of the country’s most deeply rooted educational barriers by reimagining how mainstream schools include neurodivergent learners through a wellbeing-led design that puts confidence, inclusion and agency first. Students can now access meaningful education that is aligned with their strengths, needs, and potential in a region where those with learning differences are often excluded from mainstream education due to stigma, limited support structures, and rigid academic systems that define success through a single, narrow pathway.

Instead of trying to fit students into a system where they feel stressed and excluded, TNS Beaconhouse has redirected its structure to work for the students. Wellbeing and inclusion are prioritised as core pillars across teaching, the curriculum, and a culture that recognises how, when students are unable to access education, they lose confidence. By shifting to a focus on autonomy, connection and emotional health, the environment has become one where students are confidently carving their own learning pathways.

The learning is driven by a comprehensive Special Educational Needs (SEN) Department embedded within the IB framework to ensure all learners have access. Support from classroom accommodations to targeted interventions and one-to-one assistance keeps students in the classroom environment wherever possible to strengthen their sense of belonging.

As the only school in Pakistan using a three-way model of inclusion, this method is central to how the school supports students, offering different academic paths that align with their cognitive profiles, unique needs, and future goals. This gives them space to choose between the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), the American High School Diploma (AHSD), or a structured Life Skills Programme, with the flexibility to combine elements across pathways. Through this, students and families can make meaningful choices grounded in their personal strengths rather than a single definition of success.

Teachers are trained to design experiences that encourage engagement, representation, and expression. This ensures barriers are addressed early, reducing stress and frustration, and shifting responsibility away from the learner and onto the learning environment itself.

Wellbeing is prioritised and has been intentionally built into the framework. Students are given a strong sense of autonomy and are supported to make decisions about their learning, building confidence, self-advocacy and emotional resilience. As they begin to understand their strengths, they become more engaged, more self-assured and more willing to actively participate in school life.

Over a three-year period, attendance among SEN students increased from 84% to 93%. Classrooms applying inclusive teaching increased from around 40% to over 75%, and behaviour incidents decreased by 37%. Student wellbeing surveys also show a 44% increase in academic confidence, and participation in school activities has increased by over 50%. Students who were previously considered unsuitable for mainstream education are now completing school, with 92% choosing to study abroad.

The staff turnover rate is low, which is particularly relevant in Pakistan, where teachers are often trained on the job, creating a stable and consistent environment for students. The growth of the school, from 700 to over 1100 students with a three-year waiting list, reflects the strength of this wellbeing-led model and the community it has built.

At a system level, the approach is influencing wider practice, with elements adopted across other schools, positioning TNS Beaconhouse as a national reference point for inclusive learning practices grounded in student mental and emotional health.
