Overcoming Adversity - 2024 Finalist
Woodmere
United States of America
Rising above adversity to foster resilience and excellence
Woodmere School, a state prekindergarten through middle school in
Harvey, Louisiana, USA, has transformed itself from a school once perceived as a failing school
to an institution of resilience and educational excellence. Founded in 1984, and today serving
665 students, Woodmere has faced its share of challenges, from Hurricane Katrina to
socio-economic hurdles within a community frequently impacted by natural disasters.
The stigma of being a failing school reflects the deeply negative
perception the community had of the school due to its significant challenges and struggles, both
academic and social. This negative perception contributed to a low morale and a sense of defeat
among students and staff, compounded by historical setbacks such as the devastation of Hurricane
Katrina and the subsequent rebuilding struggles.
Woodmere's journey of transformation began earnestly after Hurricane
Katrina, reflecting a commitment to not only rebuild but to innovate in the face of adversity.
By focusing on creating an inclusive environment that embodies the values of perseverance,
respect, integrity, discipline, and excellence (PRIDE), the school has seen remarkable growth in
academic and socio-emotional outcomes.
Under the leadership of Principal Givonna Hymel, Woodmere has
achieved a School Performance Score increase from 37.4 to 58.8. Attendance has surged by 8.1%,
and K-3 literacy rates have risen by 19 percentage points. These achievements are supported by a
community that believes in the potential of their local school, contributing to an enrollment
boost from 275 to 498 students.
Woodmere's resilience is further exemplified by its comprehensive
after-school programmes and a culture that fosters high expectations and genuine care.
Initiatives such as "Breakfast of Champions" and extensive extracurricular activities not only
enhance student engagement but also community integration.
The "Breakfast of Champions" is a celebratory event designed to
honour and motivate students who have achieved academic or personal milestones, reinforcing the
school's commitment to fostering an environment of encouragement and achievement. The event not
only rewards students but also actively involves their families and the broader community,
strengthening the bond between the school and its stakeholders. This celebration is part of
Woodmere's broader strategy to build a positive school culture, where achievements in any aspect
of school life are valued and celebrated.
If awarded the World’s Best School Prize for Overcoming Adversity,
Woodmere plans to expand its mentorship and socio-emotional programmes, reinforcing its mission
to empower students to thrive despite challenges, ensuring their future as resilient and
successful individuals.
