The Indian school reshaping public education by turning students into teachers

ZP School Jalindarnagar, a public primary school in Taluka Khed, Maharashtra, India, is revolutionising public school education by providing quality student-led learning with its Subject Friend system, a peer-learning model where students of different ages teach and learn from each other. In a community facing socioeconomic challenges, what began with three students in a school on the verge of being closed down has become a leading model set to reshape the way public schools across India approach education and build classrooms of the future.

A lack of teachers combined with a belief that children learn better from their peers motivated the principal and one of only two teachers at the school, Dattatray Ware Guruji, to introduce the Subject Friend system. This model puts students of different ages into groups, with an older, more knowledgeable student taking on the role of subject leader. These leaders then help the younger students with lessons and homework, which allows them to learn through doing and understanding. The young learners, in turn, feel more comfortable engaging and asking questions within this parallel support peer model.

The true value of the Subject Friend system lies in how it empowers students to create inclusive classrooms focused on collaboration instead of competition, ensuring that no student is left behind. In this space, everything the students do becomes part of their collective stewardship, from learning together to eating together to tending the school's gardens together.

Through this transformative teaching methodology, the school has successfully changed the mindset that public schools have no future, which has significantly improved educational standards. Subjects such as coding, programming, robotics, and electronics have been introduced into the curriculum, along with multilingual learning. The school now serves 120 confident and skilled students, and its educational model has been officially accepted by the government for implementation in other state schools across the country. The community impact has been significant, with skilled community members and parents volunteering to teach electronics, carpentry, plumbing, languages, and science skills. The community has also stepped up as custodians of school infrastructure by volunteering to rebuild and maintain the school and its gardens, transforming the space into one that is rooted in self-ownership and collective pride.
