Kolibri from Learning Equality
Kolibri is Learning Equality’s open and adaptable product ecosystem designed for offline-first teaching and learning. At its core is the Kolibri Learning Platform, a free, open-source interoperable platform that runs locally on low-cost or legacy devices. With Kolibri, learners and educators can access engaging digital content, track progress, and support individualised instruction—all without needing an internet connection. Once installed on a local server (e.g. a laptop or Raspberry Pi), Kolibri can be accessed by any nearby device over a local network, creating a classroom-wide digital learning environment without ever going online.
Kolibri supports a range of pedagogical approaches, including project-based and self-paced learning, small group work, and teacher-facilitated blended learning. Educators can tailor instruction to different learner needs and use Kolibri to differentiate instruction in classrooms with limited resources. Learners are empowered to progress at their own pace, while teachers can organise learners by level or topic, assign content, and guide discussion using Kolibri’s tools.
The ecosystem also includes Kolibri Studio, a curriculum alignment tool that lets educators and organisations build their own sets of content for use offline and align them to national standards, and the Kolibri Data Portal, which aggregates usage data synced from local servers. What sets Kolibri apart is its innovative offline data syncing model: even in remote settings, data collected on each local server can be synced peer-to-peer to a central device or uploaded later to the cloud. This enables schools and partners to monitor learning progress and adapt their support strategies, without requiring continuous internet access.
Kolibri supports a wide range of file types (videos, quizzes, books, interactive apps). With support for over 30 languages and a growing global library of openly licensed resources, Kolibri is highly adaptable to different curricula and contexts. It has been used in settings ranging from rural schools and refugee camps to prisons and community hubs.
To support wide-scale, independent adoption, Learning Equality developed the Kolibri Edtech Toolkit, a robust, adaptable, openly available set of implementation guides, training materials, and planning resources. Whether the goal is to introduce blended learning in classrooms, create informal community hubs, or support teacher professional development, the Toolkit ensures that organisations can adopt and adapt Kolibri without needing technical expertise or direct support from Learning Equality. This do-it-yourself model enables organic, scalable use of EdTech grounded in local needs, helping communities build their own pathways to equitable student-centred learning.
