Educating through adversity
Novopecherska School, an independent school in Kyiv, Ukraine,
exemplifies resilience by continuing to educate amidst conflict, offering dual
Ukrainian-Canadian diplomas and robust support systems, ensuring educational continuity and
opportunity for its students during unprecedented challenges.
Established to foster independent thinkers, Novopecherska mitigates
war-induced disruptions by offering comprehensive support, including psychological services, to
students and local families. The school maintains a robust educational continuity even during
air raids, underpinned by its leadership's commitment to trust, respect, and teamwork.
Central to its mission is the “Leadership in Me” programme, inspired
by 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which cultivates proactiveness and teamwork skills
crucial for navigating current challenges. The school also provides refuge and educational
continuity to displaced families, reinforcing its pivotal role in community resilience.
Additional initiatives include tailored scholarships and extensive
online and distance learning options, particularly for students affected by the war. These
efforts are supported by a safe infrastructure with built-in shelters, ensuring continuous
education during crises.
Novopecherska School's approach has resulted in significant academic
recovery, with targeted support helping students regain lost educational ground. Attendance has
surged, and the community’s engagement in school-led activities has strengthened, demonstrating
the effectiveness of the school's adaptive strategies.
Should Novopecherska School win the World's Best School Prize for
Overcoming Adversity, the funds will enhance its educational placements for war-impacted
families and expand scholarship programmes, further embedding the school as a cornerstone of
hope and resilience in Ukraine.
