The World’s Best School Prizes celebrate the stories and share the expertise of schools that are transforming the lives of the next generation and making a real difference to their communities. They give vital recognition to the enormous contribution schools make to society’s progress, especially in the wake of COVID.
Even before the pandemic, the UN warned the world was on course to miss its Sustainable Development Goal 4 of quality education for all by 2030. With over 1.5 billion learners impacted by school and university closures, that mountain has grown even steeper. The World’s Best School Prizes were founded as a grassroots solution to help build the systemic change needed. The Prizes give inspirational schools a global platform so that decision makers can learn from those on the frontlines of the education crisis. And they allow schools to share their best practices and help others replicate their innovative ideas.
Potential. Purpose. Progress. New rules for schools. What does being the best mean to you?
For us, schools that make the grade are the ones that make a difference.
They prepare for the future by shaping it – out in the world, not just inside an exam hall.
They show us what they can do by getting out there and doing it. They work sustainably, make whole families healthier and bring communities closer. They create a ripple of change that spreads from schools to society, making both stronger.
The best schools follow a new kind of rule book. And the world is all the better for it.
Because strong schools make strong societies.
The World’s Best School Prizes are awarded to schools that have developed expertise in five key areas. Winning schools will be able to demonstrate outstanding systems, practises and performance impacting the lives of their students and of the whole community.
We will award the five winning schools with a share of the $250,000 total prize money. Each winner will receive $50,000 to help them expand their work strengthening their school and community.
We believe that schools should be celebrated. The role they play in, not just, the development of learners, but also their contribution to wider societal progress should be recognised and showcased.
The pandemic has clearly shown us that despite the total absence of systems planning or leadership, schools and their communities have led from the front. So, it is they who have shown us what’s possible, it is they who have protected our children, it is they who have pivoted towards adopting and using new technologies and approaches to ensure education continuity.
So why not trust them to lead the reform of education systems by the power of their own example? The World’s Best School Prizes seek to reframe the discussion on how we can improve the performance of schools to include attributes that have worked in many different contexts – an alternative path to systemic reform that is bottom-up.
In doing so, we make a decision to take a bottom up, grassroots approach to education reform, one in which the school by the powerful exposition of their achievement inspires others to undertake the same journey to excellence.
