Korvi Rakshan

Founder and Executive Director, JAAGO Foundation

Bangladesh

Korvi Rakshand is the Founder of the JAAGO Foundation, a non-profit organisation that empowers underprivileged individuals and communities in Bangladesh through quality education, youth development, women’s empowerment, climate change, governance, and poverty alleviation. Rakshand gave up the opportunity to inherit his family’s business to help others, founding JAAGO with only a single small room, 17 children, and the vision to eliminate poverty through quality education. Today, his initiative supports the education of 30,000+ children across 64 districts in Bangladesh.

Through JAAGO Foundation, Rakshand advocates for the rights of underprivileged children to receive free-of-cost quality education, promoting gender equity in education, and empowering communities to actively participate in educational decision-making processes.

Rakshand's initiatives span across various hard-to-reach areas within Bangladesh, which rank at the bottom of the social deprivation index. These regions face significant disparities in access to basic social services, high illiteracy rates, and security concerns, particularly affecting girls.

By advocating for the rights of education stakeholders at both the local and national levels, Rakshand seeks to create systemic change that will benefit individuals and communities across the country. The Educate the Most Disadvantaged Children (EMDC)" initiative addresses educational gaps and promotes gender equity in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) by employing Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) and blended teaching methods to enrol out-of-school children aged 7-14, including girls and children with disabilities, in response to the district's severe educational and socio-economic challenges.

Through initiatives like the Let's Read Together campaign, Rakshand has spearheaded efforts to improve learning outcomes by leveraging technology and promoting a reading culture among children. By providing access to quality educational resources and addressing societal barriers, Rakshand has significantly contributed to enhancing literacy rates and academic performance among students. Through JAAGO Foundation's initiatives, Rakshand has worked to enrol out-of-school girls and empower them through scholarships and support programmes.

Initiatives like the Digital Island project utilised technology to deliver educational content and promote interactive learning experiences, pushing the boundaries of traditional education and fostering innovation in teaching and learning methods. Rakshand's focus on building and strengthening educator capacity has empowered teachers to deliver high-quality education and support the holistic development of students.

Realising the enormous potential of youth engagement, Rakshand initiated ‘Volunteer for Bangladesh’, which has created a network of more than 50,000+ volunteers nationwide.

His groundbreaking contributions to societal change led to him receiving the prestigious 2023 Ramon Magsaysay Award in the Emergent Leadership category. Additionally, Queen Elizabeth II honoured Korvi Rakshand as the 181st Commonwealth Point of Light in 2021. He also received The 2016 UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize in recognition of the Online School project for innovative use of Information, Communication, and Technologies in the field of Education.
